Sheila Metzner: Time Line

16th June - 23th July 2009

Exhibition opening on Tuesday 16th June 2009 at 8 pm.

Sheila Metzner's unique photographic style has positioned her as a contemporary master in the worlds of fine art, fashion, portraiture, still life and landscape photography. Innocent, sensual, and sexual, each photo, regardless of subject, exhibits and elicits deep emotion. It is nearly impossible to just glance at Metzner's photos; they beg to be studied. Born in 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, Sheila graduated in 1961 from the Pratt Institute, New York in visual communication. After graduation she worked for a while as an assistant to Lou Dorfsman at CBS Network Advertising. One of her first major successes was in 1966, when she was hired by the Doyle Dane Bernbach advertising agency as its first female art director. As a professional photographer she worked for numerous magazines like Vanity Fair and Vogue, among her clients were also Chanel, Victoria's Secret, Ralph Lauren, Valentino, Neiman Marcus and others. Apart from commercial photography, in her career she has created photographs of eternal artistic value, gradually expanding her collection of photographs that are exhibited in museums of world renown.

Her fine art photographs are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The International Center of Photography (New York), The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Chrysler Museum (Norfolk), The Art Institute of Chicago, The J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), The Brooklyn Museum (New York) as well as private collections worldwide. Solo exhibitions of her works have been held worldwide and for her work she has received more than 10 awards, including Pratt Institute Herschel Levit (1999), Art Director's Hall of Fame (1977), Certificate of Design Excellence (1992), 13th Edition Bronze award, 13th Edition Silver award, Night of Stars Honor (1989), the award for Best Print Advertising Campaign (1987), Infinity award by International photographic centre and Stars of Design Photography Award (2000).

She has published 4 monographs: Objects of Desire (which won the American Society of Magazine Photographers Ansel Adams Award for Book Photography), Sheila Metzner Color, Inherit the Earth and Form and Fashion. Her work has also been featured in numerous books on photography.

For this occasion, a selection of photographs from Metzner's extensive photographic opus Time line will be presented. The images taken over the span of a career that has remained prolific for over 40 years represent a selection of perfect moments, captured during journeys to different time zones. They are connected through instinct rather than linearity. The photographs of diverse styles - from fashion photography, still life, landscape to portraiture - express the author's typical evocative style, thus representing a moment along the timeline of a well-lived life.

The exhibition has been organised by Emzin, Institute of Creative Production (Metelkova 6, Ljubljana, contact person Jasna Rackov, phone number +386 (0)1 430 35 44, mobile +386 (0)31 685 067, e-mail emzin@guest.arnes.si), in cooperation with Galerija Fotografija Gallery (Mestni trg 11/I, Ljubljana, contact person Barbara Čeferin, phone number +386 (0)41 664 357).

The exhibition will be open until 25th July 2009.

Special thanks for the realization of the exhibition go to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and the City of Ljubljana, Department of Culture.
